Standing out from the Group

Filed under: Media Comment — Timothy Barnes @ 6:11 am

Members of the TRG know a thing or two about standing up for what you believe in, even when doing do is to stick your head above the wall and almost demand to be attacked.

There was an excellent piece on this subject in The Times, last week, although sadly I have only just noticed it (thanks to James Mac, for that). It concerns Ron Silver, who died recently. Ron was a recognisable face as a Hollywood actor, but he was also a political activist. A Democrat for most of his life, Ron joined the Bush administration’s calls for tough action in the Middle East following 9/11. He was vilified and ostracised by many of his colleagues for doing so.

I applaud those who make principled stands that cost them dear, even when I don’t agree with those principles (and I am not commenting on Ron Silver, here). Politics needs more, not less, of that. But that is hardly a laser-guided insight. Ron Silver’s story is sad and inspiring all the same.
