  1. I will try and keep my comment short. I congratulate the TRG for recording these speeches. It is fascinating to look back on, and review, thoughts and ideas presented by some of the most influential figures of the last century.

I was lucky enough to hear this speech in person, whilst attending the STRG event with Lord Heseltine. While I am not the biggest fan of Heseltine I found his speech both interesting and factual. You can read as many books as you want on the period of “Thatcherism”, but you learn so much more from hearing it in person; especially from one of the main figures in that Government.

I enjoyed many areas of his speech. He raised a very important point about not rushing to create Party Policy as Labour will steal it (as we saw recently with the Army benefits idea). He gave a real insight into Thatcher’s Government and the inner workings. He was asked about his views on Europe and questioned both the EU Directives and how far we integrate ourselves into the European body.

It was a very good speech and discussion. My only requests are that you do not allow Tim Crockford to choose the wine in future & that you produce smaller bottles of water for the speaker!

  2. I recall this evening with fond memory. It was a very powerful speech by Lord Heseltine to a packed audience. I think whether you agree or disagree with many of Lord Heseltine’s views, the opportunity to meet the man himself was a great pleasure. I too enjoyed the comments re the danger of producing marvellous policies in opposition which will be stolen by a Government which has run out of steam! The discussion was very enlivened! Point taken, Richard, on the wine - I was told long ago that Student TRG events should be about quantity rather than quality but I am sure that you and Chris Hampsheir can have the opportunity to rethink!
